Memoirs & Narratives: Prints by Yuji Hiratsuka is the title of an exhibit at White Lotus Gallery that runs through Sept. 12, 2026.
Artist Hiratsuka grew up in Japan in an environment of both Eastern and Western influences. This exhibit reflects both, evoking a resemblance to the traditional Ukiyo-e prints of Japanese art with their bright colors and often exaggerated faces and figures blended with characteristics of Western culture.
This show features figures in action, expressing a range of emotions, from cheerful to joyous to restless. It also explores the artist’s focus on the intricate relationship among the paper, ink, and etched copper plates that he uses to create his delicate and yet strong art prints.
Hiratsuka’s work has been shown extensively around the world, in places as artistically varied as the United States, Russia, Canada, Japan, Korea, and Northern Ireland. It also has become part of permanent collections of arts institutions as varied as The British Museum, Tokyo Central Museum, Panstwowe Museum in Poland, The House of Humor and Satire in Bulgaria, Cincinnati Art Museum, Cleveland Art Museum, Portland Art Museum, New York Public Library, The Library of Congress, and The Smithsonian’s Museum of Asian Art.
