A new show of artwork by six of Oregon’s most notable artists will have its opening reception in the Maurie Jacobs Community Room at the Hult Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Eugene from 5:3o p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 18.
The artists whose work will be included are Rick Bartow (1946–2016), Newport; Margaret Coe (b. 1941), Eugene; Mark Clarke (1935–2016), Eugene; Adam Grosowsky (b. 1959), Eugene; George Johanson (1928–2022), Portland; and Robert Schlegel (1947–2021), Banks.
The show, titled Beyond the Figure, will run through Oct. 31, 2026. It also will be a featured stop on downtown Eugene’s monthly First Friday ArtWalk from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Oct. 2.
According to gallerist Karin Clarke, proprietor of the Karin Clarke Gallery at 760 Willamette St. in downtown Eugene — and daughter of two of the artists (Margaret Coe and Mark Clarke) who are featured in this exhibit — the display “celebrates the possibilities of the human form through the unique voices of six distinctive Oregon artists. Each artist approaches working with the figure with a deeply personal sensibility, revealing something of their individual way of seeing. Together, the collection of two-dimensional works demonstrates the vitality and diversity of figurative art in Oregon.”
In addition to these special events, the Maurie Jacobs Community Room is open during regular box office hours at the Hult Center, which are noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday. It also is open one hour before performances begin at the Hult Center and during intermission during Hult Center performances.
