Wordcrafters of Eugene, in collaboration with the Lane Arts Council, is putting on a evening of storytelling, music, and art at the Oregon Wine LAB during downtown Eugene’s First Friday ArtWalk on Sept. 2.
The two organizations have just completed their first year of StoryHelix: A Community Storytelling Project, which was supported by a $20,000 grant from the Oregon Community Foundation.
The purpose of the StoryHelix project is to make this community “a braver, safer, more beautiful, and more equitable place to live,” according to the sponsoring groups. In order to do that, they say, it is necessary to “reckon with our past, which means gathering stories about living here and deciding what stories to pass down to those who come next.”
The theme of the stories gathered in the first year of StoryHelix is Belonging, and these stories will be told live during the ArtWalk. There also will be an interview booth, artist vendors and a listening room to hear the stories that have been collected for the Belonging Mixtape.
Storytellers include Daphne Singingtree, Dante Zúñig-West, and Ratie D, with art and plants available from vendors that include Liandymary Jimenez Otero of Plantchicktropicals, Erick Wonderly Varela, Brandon Waite of Waite Illustrate, Chelsea Lovejoy, Christina Schueler, and more. There will be music by DJ Rortron and food for purchase from the DaNang food truck.
