Beethoven Reimagined, the title of the Delgani String Quartet’s February concert schedule that will take place in Eugene, Corvallis, Portland, and Salem centers around the modern sound of Beethoven’s Op. 130 Quartet. The heartbreaking Cavatina reportedly moved Beethoven to tears as he was composing it, and the 15-minute Grosse Fuge finale was so challenging to audiences that Beethoven published his quartet with an alternative ending.
Delgani, in collaboration with Cascadia Composers, also is performing four brand-new works by Pacific Northwest composers, all uniquely based on the Beethoven piece, followed by a performance of the original Beethoven Op. 130 to finish off the program.
Here’s the program of the winning composers and their brand-new compositions that will open the concert:
Nicholas Yandell — The Ascent
Adam Eason — Scherzo
Theresa Koon — Homage to Beethoven
Bill Whitley — Afterimage
For this concert series, Delgani String Quartet members Jannie Wei, Anthea Kreston, and Eric Alterman will be joined by guest artist Arnaud Ghillebaert, viola instructor at the University of Oregon.
