It’s not too late to take in the last performance of the Delgani String Quartet’s third program of the season. It will be performed live in Eugene on at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 15, and it also will be livestreamed.
The music features pieces from Spain and Latin America, in particular a six-part work by Gabriela Len Frank titled Leyendas, drawn from the folk music and instruments of the Peruvian Andes.
The concert opens with a quartet by the Spanish Basque composer Juan Crisóstomo Arriaga, often considered to be the “Spanish Mozart” because he was a child prodigy and died young, 10 days before his 20th birthday, in 1826.
Then there’s La Oración del Torero, by Spaniard Joaquín Turina, that musically portrays the performance of a bullfighter.
The lineup also includes an Argentinian modernist masterpiece, the first quartet by Alberto Ginastera.
That will leave just one more set of concerts by Delgani in the 2021-22 season, Dance of Joy, to be performed in May.
It represents the quartet’s partnership with Boston composer Elena Ruehr. Delgani commissioned Ruehr’s seventh quartet and premiered the work in 2020. This time, they will play her third quartet, which includes a wide-ranging selection of music, from compositions by 10th-century Hildegard von Bingen, a Benedictine nun and abbess as well as a composer, philosopher, and writer to African dance rhythms to quartets by Joseph Haydn and Johannes Brahms.
