Halloween in downtown Eugene was fun, with hundreds of costumed people and even some dressed-up pets roaming the streets, listening to music and grabbing a bite to eat.

Two days later, sidewalks and shops will be busy again, when November’s First Friday ArtWalk guided tour gets underway, led by Erika Rauer, executive director of the Eugene Opera and herself an opera singer and educator.

Rauer starts the official tour at 5:30 p.m. at the Karin Clarke Gallery (760 Willamette Street), where artist Margaret Coe’s exhibit, “The City of Light,” features 22 oil paintings created either on-site or following her five-week stay in Italy earlier this year. Coe has visited and painted in Italy several times, but says that especially during her last trip, she “found that I was in a place where myself, the canvas, and Venice were all in harmony.”

Matt Dey’s silkscreens are on display at Epic Seconds

Moving along, the tour makes its way at 6:00 p.m. to Epic Seconds (30 E. 11th Ave), its first time as an official stop along the tour route. Matt Dey’s show, “Kick Out the Jams: The Test Prints of Blunt Graffix” is on display there, expressing a “cultural yearning to break down restrictions” through Dey’s silkscreen work. work in silkscreen, characterized by a combination of  coincidence and technique, discovery and accident.

Following the recent unexpected death of venerated Eugene artist Beverly Soasey, the third stop on the tour, at Oregon Art Supply (1020 Pearl St) at 6:30 p.m. begins a two-month show of Soasey’s work, collected by friends through the years, called “Collected Memories.” Soasey was a prolific artist who worked out of her home studio, creating original and masterful works of art, often incorporating unusual found objects.

At 7:00 p.m. at Passionflower Design (128 E. Broadway), one-of-a-kind jewelry made by self-taught Corvallis artist Dana Robinson is on dispay, made with stones are from mines, set to showcase their natural beauty without a need to be dyed. The last stop on the tour at 7:30 p.m. at Out On A Limb Gallery (191 E. Broadway) where work by of local artist Ila Rose is on exhibit. Her work often deals with the human-nature connection and elements of existentialism. This show features works never displayed before, as well as some older pieces, highlighting the progression of her style. One, titled “The Wind in The Meat,” appeared in the Mayor’s Art Show. Also at Out on a Limb, the Whiteaker Printmakers continue their downtown presence with a show of works by local sculptor and painter Andrea Douglass, inspired by her travels in Rome and focusing on the unconventional, often dark “beauties and blemishes” of everyday life.

As always, many other downtown galleries and other shops also be open during the 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. ArtWalk, including:

  • Alexi Era Gallery & Projects (106 E. 16th Ave.) — “Epeolatry: A Literary Focused Exhibit” explores unique ways that artists merge literary works into their respective mediums. Art has continuously been linked with books, as books have continually been a magnificent contribution to the arts. Infusing both of these elements, each artist uses a physical book (in part or fully) and incorporates that into their final piece.
  • Broadway Commerce Center (44 W. Broadway) — Third annual Multicultural Children’s Art Contest, in collaboration with Skipping Stones Magazine, with uniquely colorful and insightful works by international and local artists ages 4-18 years, on the theme, “From Nature to Fantasy.”
  • Capitello Wines (540 Charnelton St.) — New pieces by MV Moran.
  • Cowfish (62 W. Broadway) — Work by Bonnie Bozell.
  • Eugene Public Library (100 W 10th Ave.) — Paintings by Stephen Hermansen and sculptures by Linda Dyer; music by the Marist Jazz and Concert Band at 6:00 p.m.
  • Euphoria Chocolate Company (946 Willamette St.) — “Lighting in a Bottle,” photographs of light bulbs by William Craighead, featuring Edison bulbs, LEDs, and the humble yet spunky twinkle light.
  • Framin’ Artworks (505 High St.) — New photography of the Northwest by Deigh Bates.
  • Goldworks Jewelry Art Studio (169 E. Broadway) — Original jewelry by Goldworks staff.
  • InEugene Real Estate (100 E. Broadway) — Colorful, psychedelic-looking pieces created using a process called acrylic pouring by Tammie Albert.
  • The Lincoln Gallery (309 W 4th Ave.) — The ArtChics 14th

    The late Max Norris’s metal boxes, brooches, and earrings are on display at the White Lotus Gallery

    Legacy Metalwork,” showcasing Nixon’s work through the years, including jewelry made for and worn by his wife, Hattie Mae, teaching samples, and one-of-a-kind boxes. Nixon (1915-2000) taught metal arts and weaving at the University of Oregon from 1958-1981, and then continued his teaching career as an artist-in-residence at the EMU Craft Center until 1992.

Additional free events

  • No Shame Eugene (99 W. 10th Ave.) — Doors open at 7:30 p.m. with live music. The show begins at 8:00 p.m. made up of the first 15 original, 5-minute acts to sign up with the host when the doors open, including monologues, sketch comedy, and the experimental. Come to perform, but there’s no shame in just watching.

The Lane Arts Council, founded in 1976, is a nonprofit organization that cultivates strong and creative arts communities in Lane County. It provides in-school arts education programs, supports local artists and arts organizations, and coordinates community programs such as downtown Eugene’s First Friday ArtWalk.
