News for student writers from Wordcrafters of Eugene:
The theme for Fiction Fantastic 2025 is Echoes from the Future.
EUGENE, Ore. – It’s official: Fiction Fantastic, Wordcrafters’ annual youth writing competition, is open for 2025. This year’s theme is Echoes from the Future, and the contest is open for submissions until Jan. 11, 2025.
Young writers in Lane County are encouraged to enter at no charge. There are categories for students in kindergarten through 12th grade.
Since 2014, Fiction Fantastic has been a creative outlet for young writers to share their stories, receive recognition for their talents, and connect with the local writing community. Each year, students submit their stories based on a predetermined theme. Previous years’ themes have included Into the Imaginarium, Portals, and Realm of Forgotten Dreams.
Stories go through rounds of judging in several grade level categories. Upper elementary, middle, and high school categories go through two rounds of blind judging, with winning stories ranked first, second, third, or honorable mention. Students in grades K-2 can submit their stories for the K-2 spotlight without going through the judging process.
Winners receive prizes and have their stories published in the Fiction Fantastic anthology. The Fiction Fantastic anthology is a professionally edited book of each year’s winning stories featuring stunning cover art to match that year’s contest theme.
The anthologies are given to contest winners, sent to the winners’ school libraries, and are available to purchase through Wordcrafters and online.
There is no cost to submit a story to Fiction Fantastic. Last year, Wordcrafters received 100 story submissions for the 2024 theme, Realm of Forgotten Dreams.
