Admittedly, everyone’s been pretty hemmed in — realistically and virtually — for nearly a year now, but those who want to make an escape to wider vistas still have time, through Jan. 12, to take in a show of Jon Jay Cruson’s show of paintings, titled Overview, at the White Lotus Gallery.

Cruson’s artistic career began in the 1970s with drawings of children and patterns, developed during his military service in Southeast Asia. After that, he turned to studying mid-century homes, farm buildings, and Victorian structures in the local area, as well as coastal scenes and clouds. His repertoire grew to include the wide open spaces not only of Eastern Oregon, but also scenes from Washington, Idaho and Northern California, characterized by rich color and the way the landscapes present themselves in terms both of vast width but also the appearance from a distance of vertical stacks.

Cruson has taught art at the University of Oregon, Oregon State University, and Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario, Ore. He has been a full-time artist since 1971.
