One Flower, One World is the title of a new exhibit on display at the White Lotus Gallery, and it will be on the walls through June 6.
The title refers to a phrase from the Avatamsaka Sutra, which is a very long treatise on the Hua Yen tradition in Buddhism. Simply put, it can be described as the idea that every small part of the universe — even a single flower — “contains the world and its entire past.”
American artist Georgia O’Keeffe explained the concept this way: “When you take a flower in your hand and really look at it, it’s your world for a moment.” And it is true that artists throughout the world for centuries have focused on flowers and their meanings.
The White Lotus Gallery exhibit continues this tradition, showcasing works by artists in a variety of mediums, “from woodblock and mezzotint prints to photographs and hanging scrolls,” with the purpose of capturing a specific moment as well as encouraging everyone to embrace awareness of their surroundings.
