By Daniel Buckwalter
It’s a regional invitational exhibit where the artists invite everyone to join in their personal anthems.
Fiber Anthems opened on June 12, 2026, at White Lotus Gallery in Eugene. The 15-artist exhibit runs through July 25, and each artist brings a “personal song” to show — as co-curators Marilyn Robert and Barbara Setsu Pickett put it — to give visual interpretation to what matters and what deserves attention now.
The works inside the Fiber Anthems exhibit include fiber materials from plants and animals, threads, cloth, paper, felt, dyes, as well as two- and three-dimensional artwork.
Additionally, there are multiple forms, both representational and conceptual pieces, capturing some of the breadth of fiber art.
Much of it is sweeping, but some of the exhibits are supremely detailed, such as two pieces from Eugene artist Laura Bailey. There’s Sage Spirit Circle — five miniature dolls representing the wise feminine spirits of Light, Courage, Freedom, Hope and Strength — layered and hand-stitched with recycled cotton, linen, silk, lace, beads Milagros, feathers and other found items.
Bailey’s second piece, Mental Mending, Stitching Life Back Together, is a deeply heartfelt exhibit for the show, a quilt with tiny squares that, as she notes in her statement, was created after being “shaken both by the loss of my husband and by the heaviness of the world around me. I returned to my lifelong love of stitching and textiles, searching not for perfection, but for peace.”
Nancy Pobanz also has two pieces in the exhibit — Speculate (twisted paper cordage with handmade papers, reclaimed linen and cotton fabrics, acrylic inks and graphite pencil) and In it Together, a salute to her friends in the Navajo Nation with Navajo Churro sheep’s wool felted, mineral pigments from near Adel, Oregon, and graphite pencil handwriting on stretched canvas.
Other artists in the show include Sonja Dahl, Susannah Day, Jovencio de la Paz, Wendy Huhn, John Morse, Judy Ann Ness, Barbara Setsu Pickett, Diane Pigg, Marilyn Robert, Beatrice Roberts, Karen Sieradski, Judy Sprague and Pamela Stout.
