White Lotus Gallery opens its newest exhibit of work by Jamie Newton on Aug. 16, 2024, with a reception for the artist and book signing from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17.

Newton is a longtime represented artist at White Lotus, and this latest collection, titled slightly askew, includes a variety of his sometimes quirky but always diverse creations that  relate strongly to his observations of and interactions with nature.

In announcing the show, the curators at White Lotus point out Newton’s relationship to the ideas of architect, writer, theorist, philosopher, and inventor Buckminster Fuller, who posited that “humans are here as local-universe-information-gatherers.” To Newton, that means “interacting with the elemental,” which has been a focus throughout his long career.

In this exhibit, he includes fire drawings, assemblages that group various found and other collected objects, ink paintings, and prints of driftwood sculptures that he created on the beaches of the Oregon Coast.

Nature often is a primary element in Newton’s work, from rain and snow paintings to pictures made from wind-driven “drawing machines” that use nature itself to determine the outcome.

Newton’s art has been shown throughout Oregon as well as nationally and internationally, and he has contributed widely via publication, sound design, and theater design.
