Summer Fun and Games
- Family Music Time – Throughout July and August, Family Music Time replaces the regular storytime schedule. Young kids and their families can enjoy live music by a talented roster of local performers with active movement and lots of fun at the downtown library at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, 10:15 a.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays; at the Bethel branch at 10:15 a.m. on Fridays and 11:15 a.m. (in Spanish) on Saturdays and at the Shelton branch at 10:15 a.m. on Fridays.
- Online Game Jam – On the library website July 1-13, plus multiple workshops at the downtown library. Tweens, teens, adults can create, share, and play games on the Eugene Public Library website. Participation is open to everyone from complete beginners to experienced developers. All types of games are welcome, including video games, board games, card games, and tabletop games. Drop in downtown sessions are 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 5; 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 7; and 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 11. Classes and events
Kids: Minecrafters — 11:00 a.m. on Wednesdays, 4:00 p.m. on Fridays, downtown. Kids: play together, share tips, and get creative with building challenges with Minecraft on Eugene Public Library’s computers. For ages 6-12 years. Due to limited space, a Eugene Public Library card and pre-registration are required. Sign-ups start each Monday for same-week sessions; call 541-682-8316.
eBooks and More: Drop In — 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays in July and August, downtown location. Have fun and save money. Learn how to get downloadable and streaming eBooks, audiobooks, magazines, music, movies, and TV shows free with your Eugene Public Library card. Tens of thousands of titles are available to enjoy at home or one the road. See demonstrations of online services using devices including Kindle, Android tablet, iPad, and laptops. Bring your own device, or just your curiosity.
Kids: Legos — 10:15 a.m. every Saturday, Bethel and Sheldon branches; 4:00 p.m. every Wednesday, downtown location. Bring the kids to build, play, and explore with Eugene Public Library’s big and varied collection of Lego blocks. For ages 5-12 years.
Nature Kids: Fish — 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 5, downtown location. Learn about local fish and make fish prints. For ages 7-12 years.
Concert: Cascade Chorus — 6:00 p.m. on Friday, July 6, downtown location. Enjoy the a cappella sound of the Cascade Chorus and its four-part barbershop harmonies. In addition to musical excellence, the group does charitable fundraising and has donated over $100,000 dollars in total. The Cascade Chorus started in 1946 and is one of the oldest and most successful chapters in the Pacific Northwest, performing from California to Canada.
Kids: Chayag en Familia — 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 10, downtown location; 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 11, Bethel branch; 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 11, Sheldon branch. Sing, dance, and celebrate Latin American music with the Llumiquinga family. For decades, Alex Llumiquinga has shared the traditional Andean rhythms of many countries to audiences of all ages. Now with Chayag en Familia, he is joined by daughters Korayma, Ameli, and Kelpi playing traditional instruments (charango, zampoña, bombo, cajón) and performing interpretive and traditional dances. The audience is invited to sing and dance along, and to experience the indigenous, African, and European roots of the folk music of Latin America.
Money Matters for Beginners — 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 10, downtown location. Money matters affect everyone every day. But not everyone knows that there are some basic rules that lead to financial stability and success. This user-friendly workshop outlines these rules and helps participants to apply them to improve their financial outlook. Learn about savings, budgeting, cash flow, debt management, and how to adopt financial strategies that lead to positive long-term outcomes. This event is presented in partnership by Eugene Public Library, Prosperity Program of Goodwill Industries of Lane and South Coast Counties, and United Way of Lane County.

Tweens: Fact Check Book Group — 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 12, downtown location. “Fact Check” is a monthly youth book group featuring nonfiction books and topics, for ages 11-14 years. The title for July is Candy Bomber: The Story of the Berlin Airlift’s “Chocolate Pilot.” Pre-register and pick up the book at the Downtown Library’s Teen Center starting.
One-on-One Job Hunt Help — 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Thursdays, July 12 and 26, downtown location; 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 10, Bethel branch; 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 24, Sheldon branch. Tips, Nuts, and Bolts for a Home-Based Business — 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 12, downtown location. Turn your skill or hobby into a career operated from home. Learn the steps to take and the questions to ask yourself, plus get expert tips with Susan Downs and Michele Piastro. This workshop is presented in partnership by Eugene Public Library and SCORE: Counselors to America’s Small Business.
Summer Reading Book Sale — 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 14, downtown location. Book lovers may choose from thousands of popular, gently used novels, mysteries, and more for summer reading, with most books priced just $1.00. This sale will also feature a collection of vintage and new Kate Wilhelm books, donated as an estate gift by her family. The Summer Reading Book Sale is a fundraiser by the volunteer Friends of Eugene Public Library to support Eugene Public Library programs.
Yarn & Thread — Drop in from 3:00 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 14, Sheldon branch; 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 21, Bethel branch. Get together to knit, crochet, embroider, cross stitch, or hand sew — and share tips and ideas. Bring a project or try something new with the library’s needles, hooks, hoops, loom, and more.
Summer Walking Book Group — 10:15 a.m. on Monday, July 16, Sheldon branch. Visit the Sheldon Branch of Eugene Public Library to sign up for this month’s walking book group and get your copy of this month’s title: What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty. The group will talk while walking at an easy pace along nearby paved paths.
Get Health Info Online — 4:00 p.m. on Monday, July 16, downtown location. Health questions on the Internet can lead to way too many results – and a lot of unreliable information. Learn how to find up-to-date, accurate information about diseases, conditions, treatments, and wellness. At this hands-on workshop, get expert tips to search successfully, find trustworthy websites, and use subscription-based online resources available free through the library.
Musical Petting Zoo for Kids — 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 17, downtown location; 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 18, Bethel branch; 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 18, Sheldon branch. The Eugene Symphony bring instruments to hear, touch, and try. Learn about string, woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments.
Teens: Make Altered Books — 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 18, downtown location; 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 19, Bethel branch; 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 19, Sheldon branch. Learn to creatively upcycle used books. Make blackout poetry, folded page art, and book safes. All supplies provided.

Lane Community College: Start Your Future Today — 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 18, downtown location. Get a friendly introduction to the practical steps to becoming a student at Lane Community College with Mira Mason-Reader, LCC’s admissions and recruitment specialist. The session covers everything you need to know, including information on student resources, financial aid, scholarships, and more. Bring questions.
Ferment Foods: Sauerkraut, Kimchi, and Kvass — 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 19, downtown location. Master food preserver and food writer Jennifer Burns Bright leads a workshop to learn the ancient and healthy art of lacto-fermenting vegetables. Learn how to select a crock, choose the right salt, keep ferments fresh, and understand the science behind the process. Handouts and samples will be provided. Jennifer Burns Bright is a food educator and travel writer based in Port Orford, after teaching for many years at the University of Oregon. She has led the popular “Fish Tales” Oregon Humanities Conversation Project for two years, inviting Oregonians to share their experiences with local seafood and fishing. She holds a PhD from the University of California at Irvine and an OSU Extension Master Food Preserver certification. When she’s not out gathering seaweed or fermenting fruit, she might be found “interviewing young farmers, old pirates, and mad scientists.”
Teddy Bear Picnic — 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 21, in the park at Campbell Community Center (155 High Street). Join in this beloved annual tradition for young children and family, hosted by Eugene Public Library, with live music by Carleen and Mike McCornack and the Garden Variety Band. Bring snacks and your teddy bear or favorite stuffed friend to play in the park.
The Evolution of Space Exploration: 50 Years Before and After Apollo — 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 21, downtown location. A little over a 100 years ago, humans were just starting to take flight in short hops and bursts in the outer banks of North Carolina. Today, astronauts have continuously occupied the International Space Station for more than 17 years. How did we get from the early days of airplanes to sending humans into space in a mere 50 years? And how far have we come since Apollo? Join Dr. Carol Paty for an illustrated talk about the incredible revolution in science, technology, and engineering that took humans to the moon, and consider what drives people to continue exploring in the decades after Apollo. Paty is a planetary scientist in the Department of Earth Sciences and the Clark Honors College at the University of Oregon. She studies planetary magnetic fields, aurora, and the interiors of icy moons which may hold the key to habitable worlds beyond the Earth in our own solar system. She is a co-investigator for the European Space Agency’s JUICE mission to Ganymede and for NASA’s Mission to Europa. This talk is presented in partnership by Eugene Public Library and the Eugene Rocketry Club.

See the Dragon Puppet Theater’s colorful show based on the Korean folk tale “Tiger and Monk,” the tale of a tiger in trouble and the important lesson of keeping promises. The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art’s Dragon Puppet Theatre brings to life ancient and modern tales from around the world, using hand-crafted, authentically costumed puppets.
Compra Tu Primera Casa (Buying Your First Home) — 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 24, downtown location. Joanne DiPaola leads a workshop in Spanish on “Buying Your First Home.” Learn the steps to take to become a first-time homeowner, including how to prepare financially. This event is presented in partnership by Eugene Public Library and Neighborhood Economic Development Corporation (NEDCO), a non-profit that helps community members build a brighter financial future.

In this clever and funny book, Hansel and Gretel walk out of the forest and through a series of other classic fairy tales. This suspenseful graphic novel is about a city where reality has been disturbingly altered — and a teen who risks everything to document the results. Marty Parisien, co-founder and CEO of Singing Dog Vanilla, has been a small business entrepreneur for thirty years. He taught Marketing at the Japan American Institute of Management Science and Small Business Development at the University of Hawaii and has served as a guest lecturer at the University of Oregon, National University of Samoa, University of Hawaii, Hilo, University of Guam, College of Micronesia-FSM, NASBITE/World Trade Day, and the University of San Diego.
