News release from Clay Space

Eugene, OR – August 2025 – Clay Space, a beloved ceramic arts studio and community hub founded in 2008, is pleased to announce an important transition in its ownership and organizational structure. As of June 2025, Clay Space is officially operating as a nonprofit organization governed by a dedicated board of directors six individuals, all of whom have been actively involved with the studio as members or students. One of the former owners continues to serve on the board, providing continuity and support during this exciting new chapter.

Originally established by Jim Laub and Sandy Harder, ownership later transferred to Denise and Kevin Railsback in 2021. In a generous and visionary move, the Railsbacks’ donated all assets of Clay Space to the nonprofit entity this year, enabling the studio to broaden its mission and enhance community engagement.

The decision to convert Clay Space into a nonprofit stemmed from the Railsbacks’ desire to entrust the organization to its passionate membership, allowing them the freedom to pursue other endeavors while ensuring the studio’s future is rooted in community participation and artistic growth.

The newly formed nonprofit’s mission is to serve the community by providing accessible opportunities for education and artistic exploration in the ceramic arts. This transformation empowers members to have an active voice in the organization’s operations through participation on committees addressing key areas such as operations, education, finance, outreach, fundraising, and marketing.

Looking ahead, Clay Space aims to expand its membership base and deepen connections within the local community. The organization plans to collaborate with businesses, government agencies, and other nonprofits, while seeking a stronger presence in the broader arts community.

Currently, Clay Space has filed for 501(c)(3) nonprofit status and is awaiting official approval. Meanwhile, the organization has enhanced its administrative structure by hiring studio manager Mariah Williams, who oversees all operational aspects including kiln technicians, clay preparation, class and workshop scheduling, gallery management, and marketing efforts. This staffing update ensures smooth daily operations and improved member services.

Donations and community support are now more vital than ever. Contributions will be utilized to fund outreach initiatives that bring the ceramic arts to children, seniors, and under-served populations, as well as to upgrade facilities to better accommodate disabled students and members.

Clay Space encourages the public to get involved by:

  • Becoming a member
  • Taking classes or workshops
  • Purchasing pottery from the gallery or attending clay shows
  • Making cash donations
  • Offering in-kind services such as building maintenance, plumbing, electrical work, painting, and shelf building
  • Donating tools or equipment requested by the studio
