The new show that opened recently at the White Lotus Gallery in downtown Eugene is titled simply, “New Work by Gallery Artists,” but it might just as well be called “Feast for the Eyes.”

The exhibit offers some of the latest creations of nine artists represented by the gallery — Jon Jay Cruson, Helen Liu, Satoko Motouji, Connie Mueller, Jamie Newton, Nancy Pobanz, Gary Tepfer, Li Tie and Mike Van — as well as work by several other area artists, in the form of handmade scarves, jewelry and ceramics.

The breadth of the offerings is astounding, especially for a gallery that has built its reputation during the past 25 years specializing in Chinese and Japanese prints and paintings.

The show ranges from delicate watercolors by Nancy Pobanz, who makes her own pigments from soils, minerals and other natural objects that she collects on her travels throughout remote parts of Oregon, to Helen Liu’s vibrant abstract collages made from found and discarded objects such as paper and plastic bags, sanded and painted and stitched together in works that have ranged in size from a few inches square to an entire wall.

In between are colorful abstracts, paintings of birds, brilliant landscapes and even a piece or two of whimsy.

“Usually once a year we do this show of our represented artists,” gallery co-owner Hue-Ping Lin said. “But this year we are planning another one in the summer when we celebrate our 25th anniversary in June.”

It’s a sizable show, with several pieces provided by each of the artists. It will be on display through February.
