Though the Arab Spring uprisings of 2011 briefly raised hopes for freedom and democracy throughout the Middle East, most were crushed by repressive regimes. Some of the worst harm has occurred in Syria, where horrific acts by Assad’s military forces on one side, ISIS terrorists on the other, and a shifting collection of factions in between have destroyed the lives of ordinary citizens. Extensive bombing by Turkish, Russian, and Syrian forces have continued the devastation into 2018. Millions of Syrians have managed to escape, but overwhelmed European countries eventually shut their doors, leaving tens of thousands trapped in Greece.
