It’s always interesting to see the progression — in thought and execution — of artists through the course of their careers. A new show opening at the Karen Clarke Gallery in December takes just that kind of look at the work of Adam Grosowsky, whose work goes on display there Dec. 1 through mid-January.
The contrast is clear. Grosowsky’s paintings in recent years have been large-scale, executed in a palette that favors deep black juxtaposed with vivid primary colors in the form of huge portraits, landscapes, animals, birds, even circus-like scenes. But this show also delves decades into Grosowsky’s past, via a series of his fine-art prints dating to his college and graduate-school years in the 1980s.
His transition to oil paintings of unusual size came after he moved to Eugene and changed mediums from printmaking to oil painting. He developed a following among West Coast art dealers, and he also became an instructor of printmaking, drawing, and painting at Lane Community College, from 1990 until he retired in 2019.
This show includes the newest of his oil paintings — people, animals, and landscapes — and what he calls his “Hopperesque” scenes.
