Details: PSA: Roving Park Players Celebrates Pride Month with Free Performances of Reimagined Queer Classic
A unique Sci-Fi take on the classic play The Importance of Being Earnest in Eugene-Springfield parks. Long considered a 19th century pillar of queer literature, the play–a Trivial Comedy for Serious People–by Oscar Wilde has been adapted and directed by local performer and activist Yeehaw Being for Roving Park Players. The Importance of Being Earnest: in Space is now reimagined for interstellar audiences of 2365, and it’s chock full of references to beloved science fiction films, shows, and novels.
The June performances coincide with Pride Month, and both the adaptation and casting for the play have been handled with care by Being to represent a broad spectrum. In this show, RPP is imagining a future in which queer people can marry whomever they wish, as long as they can figure out who they really are. At the time The Importance of Being Earnest premiered, homosexuality was illegal, and its creator, Wilde, would later be imprisoned for “gross indecency.” Rich with subtext, RPP hopes that setting the play in the far future will illuminate both its lighthearted campiness and timeless relevance.
