When: 7:00 p.m. on Friday, December 13

Where: ArtCity Studios, 160 E Broadway, Eugene

Details: Eugene Difficult Music Ensemble (EDME) presents a show of chamber and experimental musicians interpreting graphic scores.

Graphic scores challenge the traditional sheet music score as they work in a synesthetic space that transcends more traditional forms of written music. Their composers employ non-traditional techniques (including text, color, image, and props) to give fluid life to a new music embracing collaboration with its performers. Compared to traditional western music notation, this increases accessibility for performances, and for audience members to perform works themselves, since often no musical background is needed to perform this music.

The scores chosen for this show explore the visions and sounds of young artists writing music today, compositions profoundly engaged with the world as we live it now, post-pandemic, climate changed, and culturally embattled.

EDME is fortunate to be joined by long-time leaders of the Eugene experimental scene, CHEFKIRK and Entresol.

Working under the inclusive category of noise, CHEFKIRK creates distinctive compositions of sound by combining improvised drone and harsh electronics forced from a minimal arsenal of boxes with knobs and switches.

Entresol is the solo project of Janys-Iren Faughn. Known for their contributions to sludge/doom outfit Body Void. On their own, Entresol largely eschews guitars and ranges from ambient & field recording to harsh noise & industrial.

Both artists will be stepping out of their comfort zones to perform sets interpreting graphic scores.

As a special treat, to end the night, a graphic score will be projected at the back of the stage so that audience members can join CHEFKIRK, EDME, and Entresol as we all interpret the score together.
