Photographer Jim Curnyn’s use of fog as a light source is well-documented in this exhibit sponsored by Photography At Oregon (PAO). In the use of day fog fog serves to block out unwanted background, while objects in the middle ground appear as various shades of grey, and the isolated — and intended — subject stands out in the foreground.

The show includes rural, farm, city, and railroad themes, such as a speeding Amtrak Passenger train “frozen” on a railroad bridge with the background blocked out; empty railroad tracks at the downtown Fresno Amtrak Station; various city street scenes in foggy weather; visions of people in fog; and rural farms enshrouded in the gray mist.

A member of the Spectrum Art Gallery, Curnyn lives in Fresno, Calif. His subjects — foggy or not — focus on scenes and objects not only in California but also as far-flung as Washington, D.C., West Virginia, and France.
