A Fox on the Fairway, onstage now at The Very Little Theatre, follows in the grand tradition of British farce that cheered up the Brits during the dark years of the 1930s and ’40s and still has a significant following today.
But this play, with the same zany spirit, is only 15 years old and was written by an American aficionado of the genre, Ken Ludwig.
As such, it has a pretty simple plot, described this way: “This hilarious farce is a high-energy ride filled with witty dialogue, slamming doors, and absurd chaos on and off the golf course.”
That pretty much sets the stage for what is going to happen, given the definition of farce as “a comedic genre characterized by exaggerated, improbable situations and absurdity, often involving mistaken identities, slapstick humor, and ridiculous scenarios.”
In this particular case, here’s the setting, as described by Wikipedia: “A Fox on the Fairway pulls the rug out from underneath the stuffy denizens of a private country club. Filled with mistaken identities, slamming doors, and over-the-top romantic shenanigans, it is a furiously paced comedy that recalls the Marx Brothers’ classics.”
So if life has been a bit humdrum or otherwise difficult lately — and especially for those who either love or hate golf with a passion — A Fox on the Fairway may be just the thing.
Cast members are David Landon, Justin Hicks, Eve James, Louise Heindbedder, Scott Smith, Henry Bingham, Leslie Murray, Pamela Peabody, Michael Hoekstra, Dickie Bell, Jill Plumb, Muriel Bingham, and Josh Desatoff.
