Start out at the Farmers Market Pavilion at 85 E. 8th Ave. and pick up the map for downtown Eugene’s Oct. 6 First Friday self-guided ArtWalk tour. Feel free to hang out there for awhile to take in several Visual Arts Week “specials” before heading out for the rest of the evenings offerings:

  • Live music by Different (6:30pm) and Jen Sennett & Cooper Morris (7:15 p.m.).
  • Make your own BEAM lanterns and hats: Join the ArtCity crew and a slew of Old Slug Queens to create your custom lanterns and hats for the BEAM events scheduled for October 13-14.
  • The Artist Marketplace
  • Cultural Currents Installation Tour (gather by 5:50 p.m.), led by Jorah LaFleur.
  • Cocktails by Thinking Tree Spirits and food trucks including STYR Comfort Food, Lot Dawgs, and Yeti’s Shaved Ice.
  • Presentation of awards for the Mayor’s Art Show.

As usual, the First Friday ArtWalk runs from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., and there’s no admission. For those needing transportation, free bus passes to the ArtWalk can be obtained on Oct. 6, the day of the walk, via the ArtWalk’s web page at lanearts.org/first-friday-artwalk/

Following is an alphabetical list of participating art spots, all open 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. unless otherwise indicated:

Allies LLC (200 E. 11th Ave., Suite 130) — Artwork by Allies’ client artists in a variety of mediums, including creations by featured artist Beth Fry.

Area 51 Piercing (505 Willamette St., Suite 100) — Body piercing jewelry and rings by Jared Duke.

Art with Alejandro (5th Street Public Market , 246 E. 5th Ave., second floor in Suite 224) — Work by Paisley Mae, Heather Sterling-Minder and proprietor Alejandro Sarmiento, often with artists at work on-site.

ArtCity Studios on Broadway (160 E Broadway, basement level) — Featuring an immersive, eclectic Halloween/Oddball art show created by over four dozen students and teacher David Placencia at WheelHaus Arts and at Foxlight Labs, a Cloud Sale collection of hanging sculptures, and printing of fall and Halloween themed images by Eugene Printmakers from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Beaudet Gallery at 5th St. Makers Row (590 Pearl St, Suite 106) — Featuring new jewelry made with opals, October’s birthstone.

Books With Pictures Eugene (99-C W. Broadway — A collaboration called Science and Comics produced by UO’s Science & Comics Initiative, a program that brings together student artists with faculty and researchers from various programs, to produce comics highlighting STEM subjects.

Christine Paige’s Refuge-2 is part of the Mayor’s Art Show at the Eugene Public Library.

Broadway Commerce Center (44 West Broadway) — Halloween Art Lab, work created in the spirit of Halloween by local artists Petrichor Gavin, Mahala Elliot, Rhae Olson, Alysse Hennessey, Julie Anderson, Hannah Austin, Heather Storrs, Debra Jacques, Melissa Marshall, Candice Westberg, and Mija Matriz.

Bumble Boutique and High St. Tonics (233 W. 5th Ave.) — Johanna Stiffler’s photography of Pacific Northwest wilderness and diverse ecosystems. Instagram at @alightphotojojo

Epic Seconds (30 E. 11th Ave.) — An Abstraction of Ancestors, new work from southern England artist Man In The Woods, exploring the connection between the land and lived experience. plus abstract paintings by two other artists. On display through Nov. 27.

Eugene Public Library (100 W. 10th Ave., second floor Newspapers and Magazines Room) — 2023 Mayor’s Art Show opening reception from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. with dozens of works by local artists (2D, 3D and digital) plus live painting by featured artist Kendra Carnes. Live music 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. by singer-songwriter Katie Sontag, accompanied by Jon Brex on upright bass. Outside the library from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Messages From the Universe delivered by Nicole Medema in the person of her mail-delivery character, The Mercury Post, including poems, excerpts from books, short stories, personal handwritten letters, words of encouragement, and light-hearted trivia.

Flux Crystals (280 WestBroadway) — Realistic wildlife and landscapes in acrylic by Bekah Zeimetz, including live painting on the spot.

Framin’ Artworks (505 High St.) — A collaborative exhibit by two friends, featuring Day of the Dead themed pieces by Cheryl Wilson and whimsical art by WaWee.

J. Scott Cellars on 5th Tasting Room (207 E. 5th Ave, Suite 105) — Impressionist landscapes of the American West by Jenifer Billman/Mann, using impasto technique with palette knives, plus Carolyn Quinn’s exhibit, The Practice of Discovery, abstract energy fields guided of intuition, dreams, and channeling.

Karin Clarke Gallery (760 Willamette St.) — A group show featuring the winners of last year’s Eugene Biennial at the gallery, including sculpture, paintings, mixed media, and printmaking works by Ron Conrad, Doug Davidovich, Kitty Kingston, Tom Miller, Danuta Muszynska, Marjorie Taylor, Jud Turner, Libby Wadsworth, and Michael Whitenack.

One Vision Nutrition (946 Willamette St.) — Self-taught artist Shimea Jordan’s poured acrylic paintings finished with a final touch of resin, inspired by Black joy, Black excellence, and the strength of Black women.

OSLP Arts & Culture Center (110 E. 11th Ave., Suite C) — Super Natural, 2D and 3D works representing the natural world as well as ethereal and otherworldly elements. Through Oct. 27.

MECCA (555 High St.)  — Featuring art pieces that turn scrap materials into fine art to challenge views of using materials often considered waste.

Oregon Art Supply (1020 Pearl St.) — Mixed-media prints by Janet Brockway, one of 10 founding members of Studio 6000 in Sisters in Central Oregon, using addition and subtraction, layering and sanding away to evoke composition and content ranging from shadows on the landscape to physical elements of landscape. Open until 7:30 p.m.

Robert Cecil Salon (545 Willamette St.) — New to the ArtWalk, featuring Balance, a solo show of abstract oil and cold-wax paintings by artist Jan Lintz.  Instagram: @Jan_Lintz_Art

Bonnie Bozell’s Halloween mask art is on the walls at the Starlight Lounge.

Starlight Lounge (830 Olive St.) — House Bozell Creep-o-Rama, Bonnie Bozell’s fifth annual Halloween art showcase at Starlight, featuring a new batch of signature creepy pieces and vintage-inspired scenes that revolve around Halloween, with a pop-up during the ArtWalk featuring her new coloring books for purchase, as well as a special release of her pumpkin carving design book. For ages 21 and up.

The New Zone Gallery (110 E. 11th Ave.) — In addition to the eclectic mix of art created by the New Zone members, there are three special shows during the month of October:

  • Smirking at the Laws of Physics, 3D art by Robert Bolman, created in search of genuine and meaningful sustainability.
  • Near and Far en Plein Air, a collection of plein air works by Patti McNutt, including paintings of outdoors, travel, and artistry.
  • Salon des Refusés — Celebrating the arts and artists not selected for entry into the Mayor’s Art Show.
  • Live music by David Dougherty – acoustic guitar and vocals.

Windowfront Exhibitions — Where empty storefronts become galleries

  • 824 Charnelton St. — When It Rains, oil on canvas paintings by Yuruhary Gallardo-Garcia, depicting nature as perceived by a child playing outside in the rain when all is muddy, when all life is drinking and thriving in the backyard.
  • 260 West Broadway — The Veil, sculptures made of chicken wire by Kimberly Strohman bringing attention to lives impacted by pregnancy and infant loss, and honoring those infants who taught love and grief in the same short breath.

 

Special events

Cultural Currents Installations — at Riverfront Park, 701 E 8th Ave; Farmers Market Pavilion, 85 E. 8th Ave.; Willamette Breezeway between 8th and Broadway; Sixth Avenue Sculptures, near the Hult Center) Cultural Currents is an ongoing collaborative effort led by Lane Arts Council, City of Eugene Cultural Services, and community partners to strengthen Eugene’s cultural vibrancy. Jordan LaFleur heads a tour that begins at the Farmer’s Market Pavilion about 5:50 p.m. and views work  by 10 artists, including: Pattrick Price and Coda Stone; Kum Ja Lee; Autumn Green and Aryanna Nafziger; Amiia Davis Cooper, Treylon Day, and Jorah LaFleur; Jose Trejo-Maya and MacRae Wylde.

“Nevermore: Stories of Edgar Allan Poe”

A sneak peek at Ballet Fantastique’s next show, 960 Oak St. from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. includes a free preview performance of Nevermore: Stories of Edgar Allan Poe. University of Oregon professor Barbara Mossberg speaks from 6:45 p.m. to 7 p.m. on the themes of Poe’s short stories, and costumes by local textile and fashion artists will be on display.

  • Pabst Art Show (Horsehead Bar, 99 West Broadway) — The 2023 Pabst Art Show, featuring all mediums of Pabst themed artwork. Ages 21+.
  • Passionflower Design Trunk Show (28 East Broadway) — Showcasing lightweight felted wool earrings and special Halloween-themed pieces from Honey Loom Designs in Portland. 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Screenings of Show Me Love and Confluence (5th Street Market Alley, 550 Pearl St.) 
Local choreographer Suzanne Haag shows films supported in part by a grant from the Lane Arts Council, in collaboration with Oregon-based videographer Katherine Frizzell and performed by dancers of the Eugene Ballet. These short films will play every half hour with  Haag present to discuss her work. Information at suzannehaag.com.
